Preserving Wildlife in Maine's Great North Woods

"How glorious - A Maine Woods National Park!"

June Lockhart, Actress

June Lockhart, Tony Award Winning Actress, best known for her roles in the TV series, Lassie and Lost In Space, provides the following excerpt from the poem Trees by Joyce Kilmer as inspiration in support of the Maine Woods National Park.

Trees

I think that I shall never see

A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree that may in Summer wear

A nest of robins in her hair;

Poems are made by famous fools like me,

But only God can make a tree.

Joyce Kilmer (1886-1918)

"Trees" was originally published in Trees and Other Poems. Joyce Kilmer. New York: George H. Doran Company, 1914.

The Past Propels Us Forward

The works of Thoreau, Muir, and countless others are often revered and reflected upon in this day and age. Through their observations and words, we are inspired by the natural world. Sadly, often times all we do is reflect. If we are so inspired by their observations and voice, then let us put into action a vision to preserve their great discoveries and foresight. Become acquainted with the world they explored and documented; intimately acquainted. Don't just browse books, but explore the untamed land upon which they walked, some of which still remains.  Let us work as a society to preserve these remarkable places where all species, human and wild can walk freely. Let us preserve the fragile habitat and ecosystems that the great naturalists before us discovered and let us preserve them before it's too late. If we don't act now, their words will be haunting reminders about the action we could have taken. Let us preserve and cherish our fragile ecosystems forever, rather than allowing commercial exploitation. Let us not fail these visionaries; allow them to remind us of what we can have today and secure for future generations. Let us allow their inspiration from the past, propel us to look forward and act responsibly.
